Why You Aren't Calming Down (And Why It’s Not Your Fault)
Why You Aren't Calming Down (And Why It’s Not Your Fault)
If you are living with chronic anxiety and hypervigilance, you are probably exhausted. You’ve likely tried the deep breathing, the standard supplements, and the mindset tools.
And yet, the warning signs remain: waking up wired at 3:00 AM, a chronically clenched jaw, shoulders that refuse to drop, and a mind that constantly scans for danger.
If you feel like you've been failing at healing, I want you to take a deep breath. You aren't failing. Your current treatment plan is just asking your body to do the wrong thing.
Most mainstream approaches focus entirely on managing your symptoms. They treat your high cortisol and hypervigilance as if your body is glitching. They give you tools to suppress the alarm, forcing a stressed system to try and "calm down."
But your body isn't broken. It’s actually being incredibly intelligent.
Your Anxiety is an Unfinished Protection Response
At some point, your nervous system predicted a threat. To keep you safe, it packed your muscles with biological energy and braced your body to protect you. But that response was interrupted. You couldn't fight, you couldn't run, and you couldn't finish it.
Because humans don’t automatically "shake it off," your body is physically still holding that protective shield up. Your HPA axis stays on high alert because your braced muscles are sending a constant message back to your brain: "Keep the cortisol pumping, we are still waiting to finish this."
You cannot logic your way out of a body that genuinely believes it is still fighting for its survival. You don't need more coping mechanisms to tolerate the stress. You need to complete the cycle.
The Question to Ask Your Healthcare Team
Healing happens when we stop trying to force the alarm to quiet down, and instead address the root cause.
To help you advocate for your own health, the next time you see your practitioner, ask them this question:
👉 "How does our treatment plan help my nervous system access and complete my unfinished physical defense response, so my body can update its prediction and naturally turn off the high alert?"
If their only answer is to give you another tool to manage or suppress the symptoms, please know there is another way.
In my clinic, we don't ask you to just manage your anxiety forever. We look at the biology of your stress, track where the protective response got stuck, and use predictive updating to help your nervous system finally register that the battle is over. When the body finishes its cycle, the high alert turns off naturally.
You don't need to cope better. You deserve to complete the cycle.
